Upisle, pronounced “up-eye-el”, stands as the most trusted platform globally for renting various watercraft. It’s a hub where the excitement of the water is always just a rental away, offering an array of options, including Jet Skis, Boats, Yachts, Fishing equipment, and Water Toys.
The Upisle project, conceived and developed by the Roobykon team, encapsulates a blend of passion, innovation, and community. This yacht rental services platform is all about crafting memorable experiences on the water. At its core, Upisle is driven by an unwavering commitment to making watercraft rentals both easy and affordable for people worldwide. Every interaction with Upisle, from browsing rentals to the final farewell, is designed to be extraordinary and seamless.
Key Challenges
Creating the Upisle marketplace presented the Roobykon team with a series of complex challenges, each demanding a unique blend of technical expertise, strategic planning, and creative problem-solving. A primary hurdle was the establishment of a robust and user-friendly platform that could cater to a wide range of watercraft rental business solutions. We had to ensure that the platform was easy to navigate and equipped with advanced features to handle various rental transactions.
Another key challenge we encountered in bringing Upisle to life was the necessity of adhering to strict deadlines. We understood that the demand for a reliable peer-to-peer jet ski boat rental platform was high, and our team was determined to deliver a solution that exceeded expectations within a defined timeframe. Meeting these deadlines required meticulous planning, efficient resource allocation, and unwavering dedication from our team members.
TECHNOLOGY STACK
Solution Highlights
To ensure smooth and secure payments on the peer-to-peer watercraft rental platform, we integrated Stripe Connect, which allows vendors to manage transactions with ease. Mapbox was incorporated to provide users with an intuitive search experience, enabling them to explore available rentals by location on an interactive map. Additionally, Twilio was used for phone number verification, enhancing security and trust across the marketplace.
For content management, we leveraged WordPress to maintain a dynamic blog that keeps users updated on the latest trends and news in watercraft rentals. To ensure the platform runs smoothly, Sentry was implemented to monitor issues and track performance. On the backend, we chose Sharetribe to build the foundation of the marketplace, while Node and React were used to deliver a fast and responsive user experience. The culmination of these solutions resulted in the successful launch of Upisle in September 2023. This innovative rental solution now allows users worldwide to access a wide array of watercraft rentals, all within a secure, user-friendly, and visually captivating environment.
The process

Requirements collection and analysis: The creation of the Upisle project success story began with a comprehensive phase of requirements collection and analysis. Through regular meetings and open communication channels on Slack, we closely collaborated with the client to understand their vision, business goals, and specific features required for Upisle.

Design creation: In this stage, our design team developed the user interface and experience, focusing on aesthetics, usability, and functionality. Prototypes and wireframes were created to visualize the boat rental marketplace’s look and feel, ensuring that the design was not only appealing but also intuitive for end-users.

Development: The development phase involved translating the design and requirements into a functioning platform. Our developers used agile methodologies to build and iterate the marketplace, incorporating the latest technologies to ensure robustness and scalability.

Internal testing: Once the primary development was complete, our team conducted thorough internal testing. This included functional testing, performance testing, and security audits to ensure that every marketplace aspect met our quality standards.

Client-Side testing: After internal testing, the platform was presented to the client for testing. This stage allowed the client to interact with the marketplace, providing valuable feedback and insights from a user’s perspective.

Support: Post-launch, our involvement with Upisle continued through ongoing support and maintenance. We provided technical support to address any arising issues and implemented updates and enhancements to ensure the platform remained current and efficient.
Main Features
Several types of listing
We enabled providers to list four types of watercraft: Jet Skis, Boats, Yachts, and Watersport equipment. Each category has its unique set of fields, allowing providers to give detailed information specific to their watercraft type. This feature ensures that clients can access all the information they need to make informed rental decisions.
Hourly/daily booking process
Recognizing the varying needs of clients, we implemented a system that allows for both hourly and daily bookings. Providers can set their pricing structures for these options during the listing creation. The booking panel is designed for ease of use, enabling clients to effortlessly select their preferred booking type, date, duration, and start time, with the system automatically calculating the end date and cost.
Instant booking
To streamline the booking experience, we introduced the instant booking feature. This allows clients to instantly reserve a watercraft for a specific date and time, eliminating the need for provider confirmation and accelerating the transaction process.
Cancellation policy
This P2P boat rental platform incorporates three distinct cancellation policies:
- Flexible: Free cancellations until 24 hours before the booking start date, with non-refundable charges for cancellations within 24 hours.
- Moderate: Free cancellations until 5 days before the booking start date, with a 50% refund for cancellations between 2-5 days, and non-refundable charges within 2 days.
- Strict: Free cancellations until 30 days before the booking start date, with a 50% refund for cancellations between 14-30 days, and non-refundable charges within 14 days. These policies are seamlessly integrated into the transaction process for a user-friendly experience.
ID verification
We integrated Stripe Identity for ID verification, requiring providers to upload personal identification documents for validation. This feature significantly boosts the platform’s security and trustworthiness.
Text/email notifications
To ensure efficient communication, we incorporated a comprehensive notification system using Twilio’s services. This system sends timely SMS and email notifications for new messages, keeping users informed throughout the booking process.
Multiwatercraft functionality
Addressing the varied needs of clients, we added multiwatercraft functionality. Initially available for Jet Skis and Watersport equipment, this feature allows customers to book multiple units simultaneously, providing greater flexibility and convenience.
Search panel enhancements
We enhanced the search experience by adding advanced filters to the search panel. Users can now easily search by location, date, and other custom filters, making it simpler to find the ideal watercraft for their needs.
RESULTS
The creation of Upisle has led to significant achievements in the realm of watercraft rentals. This community-driven rental platform has revolutionized how people access and enjoy water-based activities. LESSONS FROM UPISLE

This project underscored our dedication to offering flexible booking options, empowering clients to reserve services on an hourly, daily, or customized basis, allowing them to choose their preferred time of day to commence bookings.
Furthermore, the project emphasized the vital role of seamless integration across various marketplace components, reinforcing our commitment to creating cohesive and interconnected systems. This holistic approach extended from user interfaces to payment processing and backend management, bolstering our ability to provide comprehensive marketplace solutions.
