ABOUT PROJECT
The Digital Product Passport Directory (DPPD) platform, crafted by Roobykon Software, is a breakthrough in product traceability and sustainability. Imagine every product having its own digital identity, much like a passport, storing everything from its origins and materials to its environmental impact and compliance with sustainability standards. But unlike a static document, this Digital Product Passport (DPP) evolves over time, continuously updating with maintenance records, recycling data, and end-of-life insights. This means businesses and consumers no longer have to guess about a product’s journey. They can access real-time, verifiable information at every stage of its lifecycle, fostering trust, accountability, and smarter decision-making.
More than just a digital record, DPPD is a robust driver of the circular economy, helping businesses rethink how they use resources and minimize waste. By unlocking deep insights into materials, sourcing, and product longevity, it enables companies to optimize supply chains, comply with regulations, and adopt sustainable production practices. With its “Verify, Trace, Trust” functionality, the platform ensures that transparency is not just an ideal but a reality. Whether tracking a product’s carbon footprint or ensuring responsible recycling, DPPD equips businesses with the tools to close the loop on waste and contribute to a greener, more responsible future.

Key Challenges
Building the Digital Product Passport Directory (DPPD) platform was an ambitious undertaking for Roobykon Software, with the biggest challenge being the need to develop a large-scale solution within a tight timeframe. The project required a robust architecture capable of handling vast amounts of dynamic product data while ensuring seamless traceability and security. To meet this demanding schedule, the team brought in a new developer in addition to the two already working on the project, reinforcing the team’s capacity to handle the workload. Despite these efforts, the fast-paced development process was further complicated by evolving requirements and shifting priorities.
For nearly seven months, the project saw ongoing discussions about potential improvements as the client aimed to create the best possible product. As new ideas and refinements emerged, Roobykon worked closely with the client to ensure the platform evolved to meet their vision. This iterative process required flexibility from our team, and we established a highly adaptable workflow that allowed us to integrate these enhancements efficiently during the active development phase. By maintaining constant communication and being open to new ideas, we successfully navigated these changes, balancing quality with the dynamic needs of the project.

Solution Highlights
To ensure reliability and high performance, Roobykon Software leveraged AWS for hosting, providing a secure, scalable, and resilient infrastructure. AWS allowed DPPD to operate seamlessly, ensuring smooth access to digital product passports while maintaining strong data security and compliance.
To enhance user experience and functionality, we integrated Google Maps for location-based search, enabling businesses and consumers to efficiently find product information and trace supply chains based on geographical data. Additionally, SMTP2GO was used for seamless email communication, ensuring reliable delivery of notifications, verifications, and updates related to product records.

THE PROCESS
01
Initial analysis and decision to build from scratch: The process began when the clients provided the first design option for the DPPD platform. After a thorough review, it became clear that a custom-built solution was necessary due to the complex, tailored functionality that couldn’t fit into a template. We decided to create the platform from scratch and divided the project into key milestones. This took around 3-4 weeks.
02
Design finalization and scope refinement: Once the project plan was approved by the clients, the team immediately started work on the first basic milestone while the clients finalized their design. As the design progressed, we worked closely with them to re-evaluate it, ensuring that it aligned with the project’s requirements. Together, we defined the exact scope for the first release, ensuring all necessary features were captured and prioritized.
03
Full-scale development kickoff: Development officially began in July 2024 with two developers focused on the first basic phase of the platform. During this initial phase, they worked on setting up the foundation while also coordinating with the clients on the final design. In September, full-scale development began with a team of three developers dedicated to the project.
04
Product completion and official release: By mid-February, the product was ready for review and final adjustments. After ensuring that all features were integrated and fully functional, the team prepared for the official release at the end of February 2025. This stage marked the completion of the core platform, ready for deployment and use.
05
Ongoing development and support: While the platform has been successfully launched, Roobykon continues to work on the DPPD, focusing on small-scale feature enhancements and support to ensure the platform remains up-to-date and aligned with the evolving needs of the client. These ongoing updates are designed to improve functionality and support the long-term sustainability of the platform.
Main Features
Secure server structure
Given the critical importance of data protection, we set up a secure architecture on an AWS server to ensure that all information on the platform is protected. This robust server structure guarantees the security and confidentiality of all data, safeguarding the platform against potential threats and ensuring a safe environment for all users.
Three separate user types
The platform is designed to accommodate three distinct user roles, each with unique permissions and features: Government Agency or Council, Project Partner, and Manufacturer. This structure allows each role to access only the information relevant to them, ensuring streamlined workflows and proper data access control. Each user type plays a specific part in the platform’s ecosystem, contributing to the overall effectiveness of the DPPD system.
Departments and domain verification
To maintain organizational integrity, we implemented a feature where users from Government Agencies or Councils must register with a valid email domain specific to their department. This ensures that only authorized individuals can join a department, with members having full access to all information created within their department. This promotes internal collaboration and enhances the overall security of the platform.
Digital Product Passports (DPPs)
At the heart of the platform are Digital Product Passports (DPPs) – the listings that provide detailed information about products. These listings include essential data such as the materials used, recyclability, circularity, specifications, use and repair guidelines, traceability, and end-of-life information. Additionally, DPPs include certifications and compliance details to ensure that each product meets relevant standards.
Projects and reporting
Users like Government Agencies or Councils can create projects and add Project Partners to them. These projects allow them to create a comprehensive list of involved DPPs, providing detailed reports on all materials used, their recyclability, circularity, and end-of-life data. This feature enhances the ability to track and assess the sustainability of products within a given project, supporting better decision-making.
DPP comparison
To facilitate more informed decision-making, the platform includes a DPP comparison tool. Users can select multiple DPPs from the search results and compare them across various parameters, including material use, recyclability, and end-of-life details. This feature enables users to evaluate products based on sustainability criteria, making it easier to choose the best options.
Duplicate DPP
Creating DPPs can be a time-consuming process due to the extensive amount of information required. To streamline this, we implemented a feature that allows users to duplicate existing DPPs. This simplifies the creation of similar products, reducing the time spent on data entry and ensuring consistency across multiple listings.
Change history
Since product data, especially related to materials, can change frequently, we introduced a change history feature. Manufacturers can update DPPs to reflect the most current information, and all changes are logged in the system. This feature ensures transparency, allowing other users to view the full history of any updates made to a product’s details.
Admin dashboard
To manage the platform effectively, we built a comprehensive admin dashboard. This dashboard gives the client the ability to monitor and manage all aspects of the platform, including user access, project data, and DPPs. It serves as the control center for overseeing operations, ensuring smooth functionality, and enabling quick adjustments when needed.
RESULTS
Our collaboration with Rosella Street (the innovative company behind the DPPD project) has been a great success, culminating in the official launch of the DPPD site at the end of February 2025. Rosella Street entrusted us with this challenge, and our partnership grew even stronger as we also worked on their main project. Despite the scale and complexity of the project, the development process was smooth and efficient, thanks in large part to the seamless communication between our team and the clients.
One of the most notable outcomes of this collaboration was the effective communication strategy we established. Even though the project was substantial and required constant discussions to refine details, our project manager only needed to call the clients twice throughout the entire process. By setting up a clear and consistent communication process from the outset, we ensured that all client queries and feedback were addressed promptly, minimizing the need for direct calls. This efficient approach not only kept the project on track but also helped foster a strong, collaborative relationship with the client. The result was a successful launch delivered on time, meeting both the functional and strategic goals of the platform.

Lessons from DPPD
During the development of the DPPD marketplace, our team at Roobykon Software faced several challenges that helped us grow both professionally and as a team. One key lesson was the importance of clear communication. We established a solid communication process that allowed us to address client needs without frequent calls, keeping the project efficient and on track. The tight deadlines taught us the value of being organized and adaptable, breaking the project into manageable milestones to meet the short timeline without compromising quality.
The project also reinforced the need for flexibility. Despite the evolving nature of the client’s vision, we embraced the changes as opportunities to improve the platform, ensuring it met the highest standards. Overall, the DPPD marketplace project enhanced our ability to manage large-scale projects, prioritize tasks effectively, and handle shifting demands, making us a more efficient, communicative, and adaptable team prepared for future challenges.
