Key Challenges
When Marco Morazzoni approached Roobykon, he already had his sights set on revolutionizing the digital asset landscape. He possessed a clear vision for a crypto trading platform that would streamline the often chaotic process of finding reliable partners for blockchain, and Web3 projects. However, his initial development efforts had hit a roadblock. The early developer, while skilled, wasn’t the right fit for the project. Communication became a hurdle, slowing down progress and leaving Marco frustrated. This is a common challenge in the tech world – finding the perfect talent with not only the technical expertise but also the communication style and collaborative spirit to thrive within a team.
This is where Roobykon joined in. Our challenge was to quickly assess the existing codebase and determine how much could be salvaged. This required a delicate balance between respecting the work already done and identifying areas that needed a complete overhaul. The team had to make tough decisions about what to keep, what to refactor, and what to rebuild from scratch. But what is important, we understood the immense potential of Semoto and the challenges Marco faced. We knew how to bridge the gap between a visionary leader and the technical muscle needed to bring his vision to life.

Solution Highlights
To streamline payment processing, Stripe Subscriptions was integrated, enabling seamless subscription management for both providers and customers. This integration ensured a smooth and efficient billing experience. For hosting, the platform is powered by AWS, offering scalable and secure infrastructure to support the growing needs of Semoto’s user base. Additionally, MailChimp was used for sending custom emails and newsletters, ensuring effective communication with users about important updates and news. Zapier was implemented to automate workflows, including notifications to the marketplace owner about new users and listings, making the platform’s management more efficient and responsive.
On the development side, Sharetribe was the foundation for creating the marketplace’s core functionality, allowing for smooth user interactions. The team also leveraged Node.js and React to build a fast, responsive, and interactive user interface, ensuring optimal performance across devices. Node.js allowed for efficient server-side processes, while React provided a dynamic and user-friendly frontend.

The process
01
Project initiation (May 23, 2023): Roobykon met with Marco, understanding his vision for Semoto and the urgency to launch. We agreed on a lean, MVP-focused approach without a formal design phase.
02
Rapid scope definition and planning: To create a blockchain platform, our team quickly defined the core features for the MVP, focusing on provider onboarding and basic marketplace functions. We broke the project into sprints, prioritizing features for a fast launch.
03
Development kickoff: Coding began immediately, building a stable, expandable foundation. The team adopted an agile approach with frequent check-ins and demos.
04
Core feature implementation: Priority was given to user registration, provider profiles, basic search functionality, and a simple ranking system.
05
User interface development: Roobykon created a clean, functional interface focusing on usability rather than elaborate design, knowing refinements could come post-launch.
06
Parallel testing and quality assurance: Rigorous testing was conducted alongside development to ensure a stable launch, with the team swiftly addressing any issues uncovered.
07
Launch preparation: Final checks were performed, hosting was set up, and launch documentation was prepared.
08
Soft launch (August 2, 2023): The first version of Semoto was released, just 2.5 months after the project kickoff. We provided close support during the initial provider onboarding phase.
09
Post-launch improvement and ongoing evolution: Following the launch, Roobykon began work on enhancements based on initial user feedback and Marko’s evolving vision, continuing to refine and expand the platform, crafting new features, refining existing ones, and pushing the boundaries of what a digital asset service marketplace can be.
Main Features
Streamlined transactions
While Semoto doesn’t currently handle financial transactions directly, we recognized the importance of a seamless negotiation and approval process. Our custom transaction flow empowers clients and providers to agree on project costs and ensures clear client approval for work performed. This fosters trust and transparency from the very beginning of each collaboration.
Startups corner
We understand that not every startup is ready to take the plunge into a full-fledged platform. That’s why Semoto now offers the Startups Corner. Companies can reach out directly, and the Semoto team can create a targeted ad showcasing their services to potential clients. This allows startups to tap into Semoto’s user base without formal registration.
Flexible subscription plans
Semoto caters to a diverse user base. To meet these varying needs, we implemented a hybrid income model featuring both transaction fees and subscription plans. Both clients and service providers have access to four tiers, each offering a customized feature set. This allows users to choose the plan that best suits their budget and project requirements. For added convenience, we’ve integrated Stripe subscriptions, allowing users to pay monthly or annually.
Actionable notifications
Staying on top of communication is paramount. The newly introduced notification system ensures users are never left in the dark. We’ve implemented reminder emails that nudge users to respond to messages or take key actions within the transaction process. This keeps projects moving forward smoothly and avoids delays caused by missed communication.
Custom reviews
The initial version of Semoto lacked a robust review system, hindering trust between clients and providers. Our team addressed this by building a dedicated review functionality. Providers can now send clients a unique link to leave feedback on their experience. This allows providers to showcase not only new client testimonials but also positive reviews from past collaborations, further solidifying their credibility.
Custom photo cropping
First impressions matter, and professional profiles are key to attracting business on Semoto. This marketplace allows users to upload multiple photos to showcase their skills and experience. Recognizing the need for flexibility, we implemented a photo cropping tool. This empowers users to tailor their profile pictures for optimal presentation, ensuring a polished and professional online presence.
RESULTS
Semoto has evolved into an exclusive, members-only platform and our powerful online crypto marketplace case study. The platform now ensures that only serious players in the blockchain, crypto, and Web3 spaces gain entry. This shift has created a more focused, high-quality environment for both service providers and clients. The introduction of tiered subscription plans has added a new dimension to the platform. Users, whether they’re seeking services or offering them, must now choose a plan that aligns with their needs and ambitions. This model not only generates revenue for Semoto but also encourages user commitment and engagement. The inclusion of a free tier for both customers and providers ensures that the platform remains accessible to newcomers and small players, fostering a diverse ecosystem.
While payment for services currently occurs off-platform, this limitation hasn’t dampened Semoto’s appeal. In fact, it’s created a roadmap for future enhancements. The Roobykon team, always with an eye on the horizon, is already planning to integrate various payment methods. The most exciting prospect? Crypto payments. This addition will not only streamline transactions but also align perfectly with the platform’s blockchain-centric user base. The platform’s evolution reflects Roobykon’s agile approach and deep understanding of the digital asset market.

Lessons from Semoto
This platform development has been an enriching experience filled with both successes and challenges. Here at Roobykon, we view these challenges not as obstacles, but as valuable learning opportunities that have ultimately strengthened our team and shaped Semoto into the robust platform it is today. One of our initial hurdles involved communication. We adapted by prioritizing collaborative practices, ensuring our team members not only possess the technical expertise but also the interpersonal skills to effectively collaborate with clients and each other.
Another key lesson emerged from Semoto’s early iteration, which lacked a comprehensive review system. We recognized the importance of trust within the digital asset space, where clients need a reliable way to assess service provider qualifications. In response, we implemented a robust review system, empowering providers to showcase their past successes and build credibility with potential clients. This focus on trust-building features continues to be a core principle guiding Semoto’s development. Finally, while currently payments are facilitated outside the platform, we are actively developing secure in-app payment options, including those utilizing cryptocurrency. This experience solidified our commitment to remaining agile and adaptable. The digital asset space is a dynamic environment, and Semoto needs to be able to seamlessly integrate new technologies and features to stay ahead of the curve.
